Kennedy Avenue
Kennedy Avenue is a short street in Riverbank Terrace, in the Pinehurst section of Billerica near the Burlington line, running about 330 feet west from Harnden Road toward Adelman Road. It was part of Manning Street, and still bore that name in 1987. It was laid out on the plan "Riverbank Terrace, Billerica, Mass., May 1911," drawn by C. A. Thayer, engineer, and recorded on August 17, 1911 (Plan Book 29, Plan 25); the town's list of plans of 1912 gives the owner as the A. Adelman Realty Company. On the plan Manning Street crosses Adelman Road and continues east between Blocks 11 and 10, in lots mostly 25 feet wide. The assessors still describe the house lots on Kennedy Avenue as lots of Blocks 10 and 11 of Riverbank Terrace.
The oldest house now on the street was built about 1986, by the assessors, and its sale in February 1987 is indexed at the registry under Manning Street. Billerica also had Manning Road in South Billerica, and in 1988 to 1991 the Board of Selectmen renamed scores of streets "in an effort to eliminate duplication of names." When and why this street became Kennedy Avenue is not recorded; the registry's street index has entries under Kennedy Avenue from August 2000. Three more houses were built between 2004 and 2010.
Kennedy Avenue is a private way. The Planning Board asked the annual town meeting of 2005 "to accept a portion of Kennedy Avenue as a public way in accordance with the layouts adopted by the Board of Selectmen," but the meeting voted on May 3, 2005 to dismiss the article.
